The Premium Number Economy
Numbers are scarce, transferable and status-bearing — which makes them an asset class. Here is what has sold, why, and what drives price.

What makes one number worth more than another
📏 Length
Fewer characters = rarer. There are only 10 one-digit, 100 two-digit and 1,000 three-digit .com names — supply is fixed forever.
🔁 Repetition
Runs (8888), mirrors (6886) and sequences (12345) raise recall. Advertisers pay for numbers people remember after one hearing.
🧧 Cultural fit
8, 6, 9 lift value in Chinese-speaking markets; 4 can cut it sharply. Japanese buyers avoid 4 and 9. Western buyers mostly ignore both.
🏛️ Jurisdiction
Plates can only be used where issued. Gulf and Hong Kong markets are deep; most US states cap vanity value through format rules.
🔄 Transferability
Domains transfer globally in days. Phone numbers port only within a country and carrier rules. Some plates require a qualifying vehicle.
⏱️ Timing
Numeric-domain prices peaked in 2015–16 and corrected. Lunar New Year and charity auctions draw the highest bids for plates.
